Longer droughts and sudden heavy rainfalls are becoming part of everyday life. Traditional drainage systems can no longer cope with these extremes, but nature offers smart solutions. Nature-based solutions (NbS) – such as green spaces that soak up and store rainwater – can reduce flooding, cool our cities, clean the air, support wildlife, and make urban areas more attractive places to live.
Yet, these solutions are still not widely used. They require a new way of thinking from local governments, planners, experts, and citizens alike. The NBS EduWORLD project, funded by Horizon Europe, seeks to build this understanding by creating innovative educational materials for schools and universities. The project develops creative educational tools to help teachers and students discover the potential of NbS and inspire the next generation of decision-makers.
BURST joined the NbS EduWorld project to develop and experiment a practice-oriented education material along with the above objectives, addressing real-life challenges. In our subproject BURST has engaged landscape architecture students and urban stakeholders from the Municipality of Jászberény to co-design nature-based solutions for stormwater management. The aim is to foster a deeper connection between academia and urban practice, driving the adoption of sustainable solutions.
